Franklin D. Roosevelt Cabin

President Franklin D. Roosevelt
PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT CABIN PRESERVATION

The cabin in the Caballos Mountains just prior to moving it.
The cabin was constructed around the year 1929 as a domicile for Franklin Delanor Roosevelt before he became President of the United States and before polio ravaged his body. It is thought to have been built by FDR himself from lumber carried up the mountain on mule back on the “Taggert Water Trail”. It was subsequently occupied by two other individuals in the ensuing years which may have contributed to it’s longevity. This occupation by others as well as the remote location site combined to protect it through the years to the condition it now enjoys. It was originally constructed at the Taggert Claim site; a site made noteworthy by the book Phantom of the Caballos, by Mrs. Taggert.  The current claim owner, Gene Emerson was once the caretaker for the Taggerts and much of what we know about this cabin was gleamed from Gene’s memory.
This cabin was removed from the Caballo Mountains on November 23rd, 2008 by a group of Vietnam Veterans to protect it from vandals as well as the very real threat of having it burned down by the Bureau of Land Management. It now rests in the Community of Caballo, New Mexico, which will become its permanent home. Once improvements have been made this cabin will be on display for all to enjoy.
